Jacobs (Jakob, Jacobi, Jacoby) Family Tree

The Jacobs (Jakob, Jacobi, Jacoby) Family of Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany > USA

My line:  Hans > Hans > Johann > Adam > Adam > George > Anna

Notes:

Adam Jakob and Charlotte Schab immigrated to the U.S. in 1844 on the ship Goethe, along with their children. (Adam the younger was their child; Nicolaus was Charlotte's child by a previous relationship; the rest were Adam's children by a previous marriage to Eve Kadel. Adam's only other living child by that same marriage, Johann Peter Jakob, husband of Maria Theresa Fuchs, remained behind.)

We can only imagine what emotions must have filled their hearts the day they disembarked in Baltimore with all their worldly possessions. They were probably overwhelmed with excitement and hopes for a bright future. The parents likely felt a profound sense of relief too, knowing they were forever free of the dictates and whims of Louis the Second, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. Here in this new land, their children would grow up free to pursue their own destinies as they saw fit.

George Franklin Jacobs, Adam's grandson and my great-grandfather, told my mother that the family name was originally Jacobson and that "We were German Jews." To date, only the German part of that statement has been verified.

Adam and Charlotte put down roots in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. It's no surprise that they chose Pennsylvania, with its large German-speaking population, but why Franklin County? Did friends or family await them there? Whatever the reason, they settled in and got busy, Adam making shoes, Charlotte making more babies.

Three of Adam's children who came over on the ship, John, Margaret and Adam Jr., remained in Pennsylvania, at least for a time. Barney and Mary Ann ventured further west, settling in White County, Illinois. Successive generations migrated in all directions, and today descendants of this family are scattered from North Carolina to California.

This descendancy chart, a work in progress, was compiled from both proven and unproven sources. It may contain errors. As with any family tree, you should regard it as a guideline for your own research. I hope you find your ancestors here. If not, feel free to stay awhile and explore the site.
